Helpful Hints for Safely Removing Spots and Stains

There are several keys to success when removing spots and stains from carpets and upholstery. Follow these basic guidelines and you will achieve the best results possible.

  • Act quickly; begin the stain removal as soon as possible. The longer you wait the less chance you have of removing the stain completely.
  • Always follow the manufacturers care instructions. Inappropriate cleaning solutions may set the stain and can damage or discolor the article.
  • Always pretest an inconspicuous area first. Apply a few drops of the cleaning solution and check for color transference or damage to the fibers.
  • Begin by removing any solids with the edge of a rounded spoon, knife or bone spatula.
  • Blot; do not scrub. Blot with white paper towels or white cloths until the area is dry. Scrubbing may damage the fabric fibers or distort the carpet pile.
  • Work from the edge of the spill to the center when removing any stain. This prevents the stain from spreading. Apply a small amount of the cleaning agent to a white cloth or towel and gently work on the stained area.
  • Be patient. Repeat the procedure with clean cloths or towels until no further transference occurs. If the area is still discolored move on to the next cleaning agent.
  • Flush with a small amount of water to remove all cleaning agents when the stain removal is complete. Blot dry.
  • Lastly, vacuum thoroughly when the area is dry.
